Working Families Win Update
Don Kusler, Project Director

Our Working Families Win (WFW) project is non-profit and non-partisan and will work to change the economy in favor of working families as well as provide education about economic decisions made in Washington and their impact within our local communities. It will also engage individuals through neighbor to neighbor communication to hold our elected officials accountable.

In 2007, our WFW project kept the fires burning around the country. WFW organizers worked in dozens of communities educating the public and elected officials about our core platform: guaranteed health care for all, fair enforceable trade agreements, and economic policies that create good jobs at living wages.

Organizers and participants applied grassroots pressure on Presidential candidates by “birddogging” them at forums and meetings seeking to influence and strengthen candidate platforms on working family issues. The program also worked hard at holding new Members of Congress accountable on our core issues while preparing for key Congressional races (defensive and offensive) in 2008. Volunteers were active making calls, meeting with elected officials, and engaging the media on our core issues.

ADA and our Working Families Win project have built on our 2006 success and are ready to seize the moment for working families as this important year unfolds during the critical months ahead.

We are nearly doubling the size of the project this year thanks to generous support from labor and private donors. WFW will be in 18-20 states with more than 50 professional organizers on the ground. WFW project states will include Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. We are also looking to expand into Maine, Minnesota, and Oregon as well.

ADA is in the hiring process now and we have brought several new organizers on already as well as two national staffers to help administer this exciting program initiative.

Get involved and help support this dynamic program so that we can achieve long overdue progress in 2009 and beyond.
